Entry 2:  How It All Started

This love for Mediævalism, how did it all start?

If I were to try and think rationally on how this love began, well, it’s not easy to determine.  It did not come to me one fine day like when you take a decision.  I, somehow, felt like it was always there, within me, an obvious choice.  When I try to put my finger on any particular incident or moment when it all started, there is clear image.  I think the first time I started to venture into the studies of mediæval times was when I was about four years of age.  I had been given a small book with stories of knights and King Arthur.  I gobbled that book up, read it so many times.  It was no special publication but a little book in a series that were given with the collection of points for a particular brand of cheese way back in the late sixties and early seventies.  I had this craze for reading and my great aunt would collect these booklets especially for me.  There were many stories to be read but the ones on King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table were like music to my ears.

The first story I read was about how Arthur became King of England and how he extracted the Excalibur from the rock.  This fascinated me and, I guess, it continued to do so subconsciously because I would read anything that had to do with the Arthurian stories.  When, at the age of fourteen, I had to prepare the General Prologue as one of the texts for my literature O Level, I simply fell in love with the times and, frankly, I have never got tired.  There is something so beautiful, so profound, so touching that I get immersed, not only with the literature but the history of the time.

I hope to share with you those aspects that have captivated my attention and may you have a beautiful “journey” with me as we discover these amazing times.
