You probably would be asking what is the rationale behind creating and maintaining this website. Actually, I have been confronted with this question many times. Basically, this website has been created to offer a meeting place for all that made up the Middle Years of our History, what we identify as the Middle Ages, the Medium Ævum, which were, by no means, petty years. The span is long and wide for it could be anything ranging from the 6th century right to the 15th century and, to a certain extent, even the early 16th century in Britain.
I consider this website an exploration in an interdisciplinary manner of those times, be they historical or social, literary or philosophical, theological or political. By doing so, I seek to see how those times, obscure and dark for some, indifferent to many, have shaped what we are today. Mine is a continuous search for Truth and Beauty, of Values and Absolutes that have given us a metre of judgement and a wide array of skills and tools to evaluate and choose what we want to keep and what we want to discard.
As with anything that is alive and passes through change and evolution, even our standards have changed immensely since then. For someone like me who tends to be a mediaevalist at heart, who still feels emotions and is thrilled by the sight of any manuscript or illumination, who stands on the grounds in Wiltshire or old London, Durham or Paris, Milan or Corciano, Rome or Sicily, Strasbourg or Cologne, Normandy or Malta for that matter; every place wherever I can breathe in this aura of the mediæval past, that is where you will find me.
I understand that this can be a specialised website but I am striving to make it common knowledge to all, if it is in my power.
So join me. It will be worthwhile.
Kind regards.
Your Lady of Astolat.
